Most people often overlook the value of a truly comfortable and convenient bed. Perhaps this is due to the fact that we spend most of our time in bed sleeping. However, since we spend roughly a third of our life sleeping, it only makes sense that the “tool” we use for sleep is a high-quality one.
In an effort to provide a more comfortable and relaxing sleep experience, manufacturers have come out with adjustable beds. These beds allow you to change the position of the mattress to either be more comfortable or more suitable for health. In fact, these beds are a boon to the homecare service industry and are great for the disabled and elderly.
Best Adjustable Beds of 2021
Still, figuring out which adjustable bed is the right one for you can be difficult. That is why we have put together a list of the 5 best adjustable beds, highlighting what each one does better than the others. Then we provide a helpful buyer’s guide, so you can find the best adjustable bed to suit your needs.
1. Hofish – Best Zero Gravity Adjustable Bed
Hofish is a fairly unique brand on our list for a couple reasons. First, this is the only brand on our list to sell their products exclusively through Amazon. This has a few implications, but the most important implication is that Hofish can afford to sell their adjustable beds at a much lower price than the vast majority of their competitors. Another aspect of the Hofish business model is that they are also one of the few brands which do not specialize in adjustable beds.
Positions
Connectivity
As technology progresses, more and more products are being integrated with one another, so that your entire life can be made more efficient and convenient. One of the more notable advances in technology if the widespread adoption of smart devices. The only problem with this is that smart devices can come to occupy too many outlets, especially when charging them while you sleep. The Hofish adjustable bed makes it a point to alleviate this concern by providing you with a solid 4 USB ports the second most on our list. The major absence here is a lack of Bluetooth connectivity.
Motor
Other than positional variation, the other primary consideration when selecting an adjustable bed is the motor. If the motor is not well-made, then the adjustable bed is likely to give out sooner than later and simply become a regular bed negating the value gained from spending additional cash on a costlier frame.
With the Hofish, the motor is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the motor is incredibly quiet which will allow you to adjust your side without the risk of waking your partner sleeping on the other side. That said, the motor is only rated for 375 pounds per side. While this is usually enough for a single person, it does suggest the longevity of the motor might not be the best.
Safety
This is by far one of the best qualities about the Hofish. Considering adjustable beds are motorized and often rated for hundreds of pounds, they can actually present a legitimately serious risk especially to children, the disabled, or even pets. Thankfully, the Hofish motor is designed with an anti-crushing mechanism that senses whenever there is an obstruction blocking its path. If it senses an obstruction, the motor immediately shuts off. As a further safety measure, the bed’s electronics are protected from short circuiting and power surges even from lightning.
- A less expensive adjustable bed
- Has 9 different settings
- No assembly required
- Safe anti-crushing motor
- Has 4 different USB ports
- Motor is silent
- Base is non-slip
- Offers a zero gravity position
- Is short circuit protected
- Only a 375 pound per side weight limit
- Only offers 2 programmable settings
- Does not come in King size
2. LUCID L300 Adjustable Bed Base – Best Budget Adjustable Bed
As a company, LUCID is fairly new, but they do not allow that to slow them down. As one of the bright, up and coming brands of adjustable beds, LUCID makes it a point to provide a solid product at a more reasonable price than many of their competitors. Furthermore, this company is devoted to beds and other bed-based accessories which provides them a unique insight into the most important qualities of a high-quality adjustable bed.
Mattress
Remotes
The remote is a fairly common piece of ancillary equipment included with most adjustable beds, but few of them seek to distinguish themselves. This is a bit of a shame considering you are liable to use the remote fairly often especially at night. When it comes to the LUCID L300, the remote offers some features that allow it to stand out. For the basics, this remote is wireless though that is more of an expectation than addition. No, the truly interesting part about this remote is that it also features a built-in flashlight to help you get around when you wake up in the middle of the night.
Stability
The LUCID L300 makes it a point that the adjustable bed is not only convenient and comfortable but stable too. One of the primary ones it accomplishes this is by using heavy-duty steel for the construction of the frame. This ensures that the frame can withstand plenty of weight or movement. Beyond the frame’s material, this adjustable bed also features 2 mattress retention rails to prevent your mattress from sliding up or down the frame as it is raised or lowered over time.
Positions
As we have mentioned prior, the positional variation of an adjustable bed is one of the primary reasons for purchasing it in the first place. That said, the LUCID offers plenty of versatility in this regard, but it does very little in the way of making that versatility convenient. Specifically, this adjustable bed only has a single memory setting. This means that if you have a couple of different positions you use, you will have to manually set them up every single time you want to use them.
- Independent head and foot adjustment
- The mattress is made of memory foam
- The mattress contains odor fighting materials
- Uses a wireless remote
- Has snore reduction mode
- Remote has a built-in flashlight
- Only a 5-minute assembly
- Frame made of durable steel
- The least expensive adjustable bed reviewed
- Only a 375 pound per side weight limit
- Only offers a single memory setting
- Only has 2 USB ports
3. Leggett & Platt Prodigy 2.0 – Best IoT Adjustable Bed
Leggett & Platt may not have the kind of brand prestige that a Sealy or Tempurpedic does, but they are a major player in the furnishings industry and they extend their reach well beyond simply beddings. While this may suggest they do not have the specialization to truly compete in this market, the fact that they have been in existence for over 130 years begs to differ. As such, this is easily one of the best products we reviewed.
Connectivity
Mattress
The mattress of the Prodigy 2.0 may not necessarily be the best that money can buy, but it is a welcome surprise in a market that requires you to purchase a compatible mattress separately. While this may actually be a big part of why the Prodigy 2.0 is one of the more expensive adjustable beds we saw, it does not hurt that the mattress is high quality. The 10” mattress feature 1.8” of cool gel memory foam as well as another 2.2” of rebound foam. This allows the mattress to be both supportive as well as forgiving.
Luxury Features
With any adjustable bed that costs a lot, you expect it to come with a fair number of luxury features to justify that cost. While the included mattress for the Prodigy 2.0 is already nice enough, the fact that this adjustable bed comes with so many bells and whistles simply makes it that much better. This adjustable bed features a massage function that can be used at the headrest, the footrest, or both. The Prodigy 2.0 also comes with LED underbed lighting to help you navigate if you wake up in the middle of the night.
Stability
The stability of the Prodigy 2.0 comes from a couple sources, but the biggest source by far has to be its motor. This adjustable bed has a motor that is rated for 700 pounds per side to provide a whopping 1400 pounds of total weight capacity. This is nearly twice as much as some of the other beds on our list and ensures that the Prodigy 2.0 will last longer than most. On top of that, the steel frame offers great, height adjustable stability as well.
- An impressive 700 pound per side weight limit
- Comes with 8 different USB ports
- Comes with a great multi-mattress
- Uses wireless remotes
- Has a massage function
- Offers underbed lighting
- Has snore reduction mode
- Comes with 2 remotes
- Can save 4 positions
- Can be controlled by the app
- A more expensive adjustable bed
- The mattress may be too firm for some
- Remote and app can be finicky
4. Reverie 9t – Best Performing Adjustable Bed
Reverie is another company that is fairly new to the adjustable bed market, but they are by far one of the best manufacturers that we could find. Though they have only been around for about a decade and a half, this company has found an incredible balance between quality and features to provide what we consider the best performing adjustable bed available.
Luxury Features
Controls
Beyond the luxury features associated with the performance of the adjustable bed itself, the Reverie 9T also goes the extra mile when it comes to its remote. While it only comes with a single remote, it is fairly impressive nonetheless. First, this is the only remote we saw that comes with an OLED screen to tell you what the current bed’s settings are. On top of that, the remote can be charged wirelessly with the included Qi charging pad that can also charge certain smartphones and has a built-in USB port as well.
Frame
The frame of the Reverie 9T also exceeds expectations though that should be considered par for the course at this point. For one, this is the only bed frame out of the products we reviewed that is made out of wood. While it may not necessarily be stronger than steel, it is still plenty strong and far more attractive than steel. Even better, this adjustable bed is also a wallhugger, so you do not have to worry about the incline or reclining functions separating you from your nightstand.
Positions
Keeping in line with the overall quality of the Reverie 9T, the positional options for this bed are impressive. That said, this adjustable bed only offers 2 memory settings which is fairly common. Though, at this price, you would expect that to be better than average. Still, it does come with a zero gravity setting and can be infinitely adjusted. However, the most impressive part of this bed’s adjustments is that it has a separate lumbar support adjustment.
- Uses wireless remotes
- Has a massage function
- Has built-in alarms
- Has snore reduction mode
- Offers zero gravity alignment
- Wireless charging pad included
- Frame made of wood
- Features a wall-hugger design
- Offers underbed lighting
- Can be controlled by the app
- Independent, infinite settings
- Only a 425 pound per side weight limit
- Easily the most expensive adjustable bed on our list
- Only offers two memory settings
5. Classic Brands Adjustable Comfort Adjustable Bed Base – Best All-Around Value Adjustable Bed
Classic Brands is another company that specializes exclusively in beds and bed-related accessories. Combine this focus with a history that extends back over 4 decades and you have a company that seemingly knows what its customers want and is able to provide it. In this regard, Classic Brands is actually a bit hit or miss, though their design is solid but the execution is not always accurate.
Motor
Positioning
Another solid quality of the Adjustable Comfort is its positioning options. First and foremost, this adjustable bed comes equipped with a preset zero gravity position which will promote relaxation as well as improved circulation. On top of the zero gravity and other two preset positions, the headrest and footrest can also be adjusted infinitely and individually.
Stability
This is arguably the part regards the Adjustable Comfort that carries with it the most caveats. First, the frame of this adjustable bed is made out of heavy duty steel. Moreover, the frame also provides a mattress bar to prevent the mattress from sliding over the regular incline and recline uses. Unfortunately, the frame is also the most likely culprit regarding poor quality control with hardware shipped stripped and parts of the frame arriving bent.
- A total 1000 pound weight capacity
- A less expensive adjustable bed
- Uses a wireless remote
- Provides head and foot massage
- Offers a zero gravity position
- Independent head and foot adjustment
- Stable mattress bar
- Fairly quiet motor
- Only has 2 USB ports
- Not the easiest assembly
- Quality control is hit or miss
Best Adjustable Beds – Buyer’s Guide
When it comes to an adjustable bed, the primary component that sets and adjustable bed apart from a normal bed is the inclusion of a motor.
Motor – The motor is used to raise or lower your position for both comfort and health purposes. While only the cheapest of the cheap adjustable beds will have motors that truly struggle, the strength of the motor can have an impact in other regards too. Moreover, the motor can also impact the general ambiance of your bedroom experience.
Volume – While not necessarily a primary consideration, the volume of the motor may matter more if you happen to share a bed with a partner. Plenty of people will lay in bed together without necessarily going to sleep at the same time. If the motor is loud, it may wake the person who goes to sleep earlier back up.
Weight Capacity – This is the most relevant quality of an adjustable bed’s motor. While few people are going to be able to test most adjustable bed motors’ maximum weight capacity, that figure will mean more than just how heavy a person the motor can accommodate. The higher the weight capacity, the more powerful the motor. If powerful motors deal with less weight, they will generally last longer than a motor with a lower weight capacity dealing with the same weight.
Positions
While the motor may be the biggest consideration that you can analyze from a technical perspective, the whole point of buying an adjustable bed in the first place is to adjust its position to your preference of comfort. As such, adjustable beds need to be able to offer a good range of motion as well as make adjusting it easier.
Programmed – The most common arrangement for an adjustable bed is to have around 4 different pre-programmed positions which generally includes flat as one of the positions. When examining this aspect, keep an eye out for the zero gravity position as that is generally the healthiest position available for more people. Also, the more positions you can save to memory, generally the more convenient using the adjustable bed will be.
Free – Just as important as the programmed and programmable positions are to an adjustable bed, the ability to make minor adjustments to suit your particular needs is also vital. In this regard, you will look for 2 qualities. The first quality you want is the ability to adjust the head and the feet separately. This will ensure you can find the position that is most comfortable for you. The second feature that is a bit less important but still nice is the “infinite” adjustment range which does not have preassigned movement distances and allows for minute changes.
Wallhugger
This quality is definitely more in the convenience section, but may actually be fairly important depending on the arrangement of your bedroom. Basically, a wallhugger adjustable bed keeps your head and torso position more or less constant regardless of the bed’s incline or recline position. This prevents the bed from moving you away from your nightstand or anything else on the side your bed.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the best adjustable bed is going to be the one which provides the features you need at the price you want. Granted, if money is not an option, then there are plenty of high-end adjustable beds that come with loads of bells and whistles. Of course, there are excellent quality adjustable beds that do not cost quite as much too.
For the luxury experience, it will be hard to find a better option than the Reverie 9T. This adjustable bed practically oozes with additional features. Whether you look at its massage features, solid positional options, additional lumbar support, or any other number of qualities, it definitely provides the best performance out of an adjustable bed that we saw.
If, on the other hand, you are looking for an adjustable bed that provides a great experience at a significantly lower cost, we recommend the Hofish. Though the brand may not be the most well-known, it offers the safest and most reliable experience with anti-crushing technology and surge protection. On top of that, the 4 USB ports are the second most on our list.
